Role Summary

The Packaging Component Control & Optimization group focuses on primary packaging components, tooling, and materials used across our network. The team is focused on biologics and sterile injectable primary components/materials and their suppliers which have highest risk to our operations. The goals include: strengthening Suppliers, executing continuous improvements, maintaining and developing tooling, and providing support on investigations associated with these tools and components. The team also leverages development processes within the network to ensure appropriate tooling strategy, tooling and component design, supplier selection, production line compatibility, material selection, product suitability, and alignment with overall business relationships.

Role Description

The Sr. Tooling Engineer will provide scientific expertise and leadership to drive global strategies that improve tooling and components, supply reliability, and total cost of ownership for Sterile Injectable packaging and delivery system components. The primary objective is to develop and maintain tooling and components that will ensure the supply of product to US and global markets through the following activities.

  • Serve as technical owner for injection molding tools at suppliers, plastic components, and molding technologies. Provide technical expertise for worldwide molding and tooling challenges.
  • Develop tooling designs and strategy to facilitate new development and lifecycle management projects. Work with sites and suppliers to ensure alignment on these programs with network strategy.
  • Ensure timely resolution of technical issues to sustain a consistent supply of product to US and global markets.
  • Develop tooling cost estimates and budgeting plans for critical projects. Lead efforts to identify tooling capital needs and request annual capital funding.
  • Lead projects to build new tools for suppliers across the network and to ensure tooling capacity aligns with production needs
  • Implement tooling strategies to support large scale product changes or design improvements to support process improvements in conjunction with worldwide manufacturing operations.
  • Interface with suppliers to drive tooling refurbishments and continuous improvement of tooling and components across the network
  • Utilize technical knowledge and data analytics to resolve complex product investigations for plastic components and tooling at manufacturing and supply sites (domestic and global)
  • Implement unique solutions to support tooling and component improvements.
  • Align network strategy to implement Supplier tooling/component improvements to support manufacturing and ensure component and product quality across the global network.
  • Develop and maintain systems and tools to monitor tool condition and supplier performance across the network.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Engineering or Science with 7 years of experience required.
  • Experience or technical background in injection molding and tooling is desirable.
  • Related experience in the production or support of Sterile Injectable or Device products or a closely related field is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability as technical lead on large projects with large multi-discipline teams impacting many products or full product lines including defining the technical strategy.
  • Must work well in a team environment and be capable of fostering the confidence across the supply network.
  • Excellent technical writing and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple tasks over the course of a normal work day.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be capable of applying their skills to the solution of complex problems.
  • Must be capable of fostering the confidence across the supply network.
  • Must be knowledgeable of outside resources that can be contracted in order to resolve complex issues.
  • Must be capable of completing a full day of work either sitting at a desk/computer or standing in a supplier or network manufacturing site.
  • Must be capable of supporting activities at the supplier and the lab, as needed, to provide technical guidance.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Domestic and International Travel will be required to provide on-site technical support, visit supplier sites and address issues across the network.
  • Adherence to safety procedures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment will be critical for lab work and site/supplier visits, as required.
  • Occasional non-core/non-standard work hours may be required to support meetings in different regions or to support critical activities.
