What you will do:

Stryker’s Senior Principal Industrial Designer will lead design activities, collaborating with engineering and marketing teams in the research and development of product platforms within the Instruments division, focusing on surgical procedural solutions. User Centered Design techniques are key skills required to determine appropriate user experience, ergonomics, function, aesthetics, quality and safety. The Senior Principal Industrial Designer plays a central role in planning and leading user observation research in the OR, synthesis and prioritization of insights as well as creating compelling design solutions and strategies through 2D and 3D visualization prototypes, platforms and systems. Successful candidates should have the technical and management skills to lead the team through the design development process from concept to implementation, leveraging various design methodologies and tools. Merging an understanding of user and business needs, this role is expected to drive high quality design solutions that meet or exceed customer needs. Our strongest candidates will demonstrate design leadership qualities with a commercial portfolio to match, and will have the ability to act as a Design mentor to members of the design team and drive design strategy within business leadership.

  • Ensures divisional and inter-divisional consistency in matter regarding visual brand language in product design.
  • Help identify new market opportunity, core and adjacent in line with brand value
  • Lead research design trends and product limitations, use research data to define appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget, production costs/methods, and market characteristics
  • Lead development of product vision and portfolio brand language
  • Responsible for input related to Stryker product offerings, form development, human factors and ergonomics, material selection, finished, color, brand language and graphical user interfaces
  • Support project team in the development of best in class and only in class products
  • Lead multi-disciplinary team meetings and conversation on Industrial Design
  • Present design concepts and portfolio to project team and management
  • Lead testing and validation of designs in focus groups or surveys
  • Act as a technical resources on a project, assignments are broad in nature, requiring originality and ingenuity.
  • Evaluate and manage outside Industrial Design firms as needed
  • Mentor Industrial Designers, lead and actively participate in ID reviews and critique sessions.

What you need:

  • BFA or BS in Industrial Design or Product Design
  • 10+ years of experience including 5yrs of experience leading development teams and projects and a portfolio that demonstrates your work on commercialized products
  • Experience in the medical field is a plus
  • Expertise in Design software such as Adobe CS, Rhino or Solidworks is a must, ProE and other software is a plus
