*Accelerators are organizations that support business growth, typically working with start-ups to connect them with resources, information, and essential collaborations to establish the business and commercialize a product. Some accelerators are part of a college or university, others are independent entities.

*SmartZones are regions designated by the MEDC with organizations to promote collaboration between universities, industry, research entities, and government and community institutions in that geographic region.
