Rep. Fred Upton Announces Retirement

U.S. Representative Fred Upton (R-6) announced that the current term would be his last, and he will not run for re-election in November 2022. First elected in 1987, Fred (as he always asked anyone to call him) previously served on the House GOP’s leadership steering committee and chaired the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee. Additionally, he co-chairs the House Medtech Caucus and is Vice-Chair of the House Problem Solvers Caucus.

He will be remembered for his relentless work ethic and willingness to work across the aisle, including spearheading passage of the landmark 21st Century Cures Act in 2016 that paved the way for the accelerated roll-out of coronavirus vaccines, among other FDA and healthcare reforms.

Fred’s retirement will be a huge loss to the bio-industry. He has been a stalwart champion for the pharmaceutical, medical device and healthtech sectors focused on solving issues that improve access to life-saving treatments for patients.

No matter the complexity of the issue nor the diversity of perspectives, Fred has always found a way to develop bipartisan consensus and deliver legislation that has directly impacted lives for the better. His humility, grace and most importantly, integrity, has defined his approach to legislating, and frankly, dealing with people generally. The exit of legislative titan at the end of this year will be an enormous loss for the Michigan Congressional delegation, Congress, and the state.
