Legislation referred to as “Queenie’s Law,” was reintroduced in the Senate, SB 127, along with a companion bill in the House, HB 4254, to prohibit painful animal experiments at public institutions. The bill is a continued response to long-running, controversial dog studies conducted at Wayne State University.
Advocates say the bill will end painful and deadly experiments on dogs at public universities in the state, even though those studies are approved and funded by the NIH and follow all regulatory and compliance requirements for animal welfare.
The research at WSU by critics is aimed at developing new strategies for the treatment of congestive heart failure and hypertension and use long accepted and validated models of cardiovascular pathophysiology.
In the prior legislative session, MichBio provided written testimony in opposition to the proposed legislation. MichBio and the Animal Health Institute argued that the bill would have unintended consequences relating to future research that could benefit humans and animals and that it would portray the state of Michigan as cultivating an anti-life science agenda and result in detrimental impacts to biomedical innovation and economy.
The bills have been sent to the Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee and the House Regulatory Reform Committee for further deliberation.
